Next month, hear from PAYETTE Building Scientists Chris Mackey and Alejandra Menchaca at the Building Simulation 2017 Conference in San Francisco, California. On August 7-9, practitioners and researchers from around the world will share information and the state-of-the-art simulation tools and applications and discuss new developments. The conference will feature updates and insights regarding new research to improve simulation capabilities for advanced low-energy building systems, case studies from successful projects that demonstrate the key role that simulation plays, and ongoing efforts to enable compliance and building rating software to support radiant and other energy efficient systems.
ENERGY + ENVELOPE DESIGN WITH HONEYBEE OPENSTUDIO + THERM
The session will focus on building energy modeling and envelope U-value modeling with the Honeybee plugin for Grasshopper. In the morning, participants will setup a parametric energy model and use it to perform a sensitivity analysis to inform intermediate stages of design. In the afternoon, instructors will explain the basics of modeling construction details with Honeybee THERM. Honeybee is currently the only plugin linking LBNL THERM and WINDOW to a CAD interface and so it provides the only alternative to THERM’s own drawing interface. At the end of the workshop, the results of the THERM models will be used to inform the energy models built in the morning.

Architects, engineers, and consultants seeking to automate and customize energy and envelope performance studies typically run in mid-to-late stages of design. Researchers interesting in the opportunities afforded by parametric energy modeling. If you have been looking for a better way to draw/build THERM models outside of the THERM interface, this session is definitely for you.

In addition to the workshop, PAYETTE’s Chris Mackey and Alejandra Menchaca will also be leading two presentation sessions on our Glazing and Winter Comfort Tool. The tool is based on existing scientific research that aims to improve the design community’s understand of the triggers of thermal discomfort in the wintertime. It was developed to be simple and intuitive so that architects and engineers can design glazed facades that provide the desired levels of transparency, comfort and energy performance at an ideal cost. The tool is a result of one of our on-going research initiatives and development of the tool involved contributions from building scientists, designers and web developers.
