REVITALIZING THE CAMPUS HEART
Considering this plan at the scale of the campus, we concluded that the College of Engineering lacked an address and coherence within the campus context. As a result, the Master Plan recommended revitalizing and reinventing the Engineering Library to leverage its address at the heart of the precinct and the confluence of series of important campus arteries. The resulting plan suggested a cascading series of campus spaces that provide an identity for the College, while also drawing in the University as a whole through accommodations for a student commons, maker and project spaces and computational facilities.
SETTING GOALS
The study focused on providing open core facilities to promote innovation and collaboration across the College, University and community, as well as expanding into new, desperately needed state-of-the-art facilities, allowing other departments to grow into vacated spaces. The team reconsidered the value of existing facilities with respect to efficiency, best use and an appreciation for the College of Engineering’s legacy in order to organize these opportunities in a series of decisive moves, varied in size and cost, and able to be completed independently of one another. Ultimately, the plan effectively knit these interventions together through a series of connected campus spaces that develop an identity and relationship between the programs and the Engineering Precinct as a whole.
