Understanding Discomfort
RADIANT DISCOMFORT
Direct solar radiation increases the effective mean radiant temperatures experienced by occupants, making them feel warmer. The degree of discomfort depends on how much of the occupant’s body is exposed to the sun, the color of their skin or clothing, and the glazing properties.
To minimize discomfort, try:
- Decreasing the total amount of glazing
- Decreasing the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient of the glass
- Changing the window orientation
- Adding shading
VISUAL DISCOMFORT
Bright sunlight reflecting off interior surfaces creates glare resulting in visual discomfort for occupants. The extent of discomfort depends on the glazing geometry, the color of interior surfaces, and presence or lack of shading devices.
To minimize discomfort, try:
- Decreasing the total amount of glazing
- Changing the window orientation
- Adding shading
