These increasingly popular buildings present unique design demands and occupant challenges—as well as novel and lofty aims to transform the research enterprise and the very nature of higher education. This session explores the latest research on IABs and features interactive discussion, hands-on design activities, and a ready-to-use post-occupancy evaluation toolkit.

The session will demonstrate the benefits of European tilt-turn windows for residents of long-term care institutions, many of whom have health conditions that inhibit their ability to access the outdoor environment. These windows offer a high-performance and accessible option to optimize restorative light, air, and views within the resident room. Through examinations of case studies, the session will balance a set of complex and interrelated concerns: solar radiation and shading, air, water, vapor and thermal control, natural ventilation, complex construction sequencing, embodied carbon, economy, durability, and safety.
