Community Engagement – Achieving an Institution’s Transformative Mission

Nearly 10 years ago, the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center began a transformation from an inward focused academic medical center to become the region’s leader in innovative patient-focused care. This session investigates the planning and decision making process that supported nearly $500m of phased renovations and new construction to support the institution’s new mission. Presenters will offer insights into how the campus’ internal and external organizations worked together to achieve simultaneous and often conflicting goals. Notably, these include balancing patient focused care with medical education, research and community engagement and strategies for multi-year construction project on staff and patient satisfaction.

Small Footprint, Big GainChallenges and Opportunities of Building Within a Constricted Urban Site

Learn the clinical, facilities and urban design challenges of building within a severely constricted site. Boston Children’s Hospital (BCH) is situated in one of the most densely populated urban districts in the city. A rare opportunity occurred when a constricted piece of real estate became available for a much needed expansion of existing clinical programs includind: ED; MRI; surgery; pharmacy; neurology; and four floors of patient beds. The outcome is a lean infill, 10 story addition that has significantly improved the overall operational flow and patient/family satisfaction. The new single patient rooms have also prompted BCH to begin renovating the existing rooms to achieve parity.
