Hilary Barlow recently joined the firm’s ranks of registered architects. Today we celebrate her accomplishments.
Hilary Barlow joined PAYETTE after completing her B.Arch at Syracuse University in 2013. She graduated magna cum laude and received the Alpha Rho Chi Bronze Medal. She has been highly involved with collaborative design assist at PAYETTE, having worked on site for the collocated Alexandria Real Estate Equities 75-125 Binney St. Project. She was involved in the design and detailing of the Atrium and spiral stair, in addition to working on the Core and Shell. Hilary also worked on the space utilization and condition assessment for Williams College, and while interning at PAYETTE in the summer of 2012, was involved with Construction Administration for the Harvard Art Museums project. She is now working on an addition to the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. As a current co-chair of PAYETTE’s Young Designers Core, Hilary is interested in engaging young leaders and creating new opportunities to supplement emerging professionals’ learning. Hilary led the firm’s award-winning submission for the IDP Outstanding Firm of the Year Award and has initiated new platforms to foster mentorship at PAYETTE.
What inspires you?
I am inspired by nature, detailing, simple yet elegant designs, tectonics, materiality, process, exploring and running.
What is the best part of your job?
Problem solving and working collaboratively with people to develop a unique design solution for each client. I love that I learn something new every day and constantly challenge myself. There is no better feeling than seeing a design take built form and being able to positively impact how people use space.
What is the most important thing you’ve learned so far?
The importance of clear and effective communication—in drawings, conversation and writing. Also, that the design process is never finished.
The sky is the limit: if you could design or redesign anything, what would it be?
I would love to design a School of Architecture and my own house.

This year’s studio identifies seven sites along the frayed edges of Boston’s Greenway. The Greenway is a one-mile-long linear park running through the heart of the city, reconnecting downtown Boston with its waterfront. Many of the parcels along its edges remain undeveloped and present mute, blank facades to the public realm. Addressing and repairing these edges through acts of infilling, layering, grafting, framing, and placemaking is the core focus of the studio—SUTURE.
