This year we are very excited to lead several sessions this fall at ArchitectureBoston Expo (ABX) including three sessions focusing on sustainability.
Overcoming the Performance Challenges of Glass Facades
This presentation will use a real project to illustrate the collaborative approach that pulled architects, consultants, and engineers out of their silos to explore strategies that benefit both the design intent and performance of glazed facades. Participants will be guided through how the key metrics used to measure performance were defined, the integrated process used to analyze the facade, and the evolution of the design reasoning behind the final outcome. The session will cover how an array of simulations performed by different team members were integrated to inform how the glass type and, space conditioning strategies, including natural ventilation, chilled beams and shading system, were selected and optimized. The session will conclude with each of the presenters-architect, building scientist, mechanical engineer and sustainable design consultant-sharing their perspective on key take aways they intend to use on future projects with different team members.

The AIA 2030 Commitment: Building Energy Literacy
The AIA 2030 Commitment has contributed to greater firm awareness regarding energy consumption and changed the way firms work by integrating performance information into the design process. Relevant to participants just learning about the Commitment as well as to current signatories, the session will cover new tools and developments in the program such as the online performance tracking tool, the Design Data Exchange (DDx), and the proposed changes for interiors projects. This session will explore the impact of the Commitment on firm culture and practice through the lens of two different firms. Also discussed will be next steps for these organizations as they continue to push for ever more efficient buildings. The presentation will provide a comparative look at new developments and different firm experiences that will set the stage for dialog with the audience on transformation of firm culture and the adoption of the AIA 2030 Commitment.

Transforming Inertia
There is a huge opportunity for practitioners to learn how to change firm culture and overcome inertia in order to pursue sustainability in their projects. The presentation will cover the insight of those outside of a firm but working on this issue with firms, as well as the perspectives of those in an architecture and engineering firm. The client just cares about cost. The principal isn’t really interested in integration. Half the project team has bought into sustainability and health goals and half hasn’t. We hear the same complaints from even the most progressive designers year after year. Ugh inertia. In this session we’ll identify and then design the behaviors and processes that we actually want. Not just another session about integrated design (“won’t work here”) or trickery (“what’s this broccoli doing in my chocolate?”), you’ll go home with specific, easy, fun, collaborative, momentum-building wins for your practice.
