The new Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Complex defines Northeastern University’s expansion across major rail lines reconnecting two Boston neighborhoods. The site for the new high performance research building provided an opportunity to strengthen the Columbus Avenue corridor, improve pedestrian connections and create new open space and streetscape amenities to be shared with the surrounding community.
Similar to the building location connecting two neighborhoods, the atrium, with its signature staircase, brings together teaching and research as one collaborative research culture. By strategically placing all the offices, staff workstations, conference rooms, break areas, cafes and research labs look across the atrium, all the pedestrian traffic is centered around the atrium space creating a vibrant shared social hub of the building.
