High Performance through Post Occupancy Engagement: 4 firms go deep
Sustainability@AIA
The AIA launched the Sustainability Leadership Opportunity Scan in 2013 that identified four priority areas for architectural leadership through sustainability: two core-to-design issues on Energy and Materials; two that focus on emerging trends of Design + Health and Resilience. There’s been a lot of activity within the AIA and with key partners since that initial document on each of these topic areas. These cover topics from the building to neighborhood, to urban scale for existing and new construction; from development of new tools to practice-based research; from professional education to policy and positions. This session will go into detail about recent activities, what we’ve learned to date, and how plans for the future are developing to increase the focus and impact for all engaged in driving towards a sustainable, resilient and equitable future.

High Performance through Post Occupancy Engagement: 4 firms go deep
The gap between predicted and measured performance is a mystery with many plausible suspects. But designers want more than someone to blame–they want to know how to design differently so they can close the gap. This session features speakers from 4 firms seeking to close the feedback loop. They show it is indeed possible to achieve performance exceeding prediction, but it requires we work in new ways, staying engaged with our buildings long after they’re ‘done’. We demonstrate some of the new tools being used and allow audience members to interact with the tools, and share how we make sense of all this data learn the lessons it can teach. We argue not for Post Occupancy Evaluation, but Post Occupancy Engagement, where the design team maintains a connection with the buildings and their occupants long term. Individual case studies are put in context by firms developing performance inventories of dozens of buildings in their portfolios. The session will also touch on the question of how to measure the degree of success of individual design moves. The presenters will share how working this way has changed design practice in their own firms, and how it could change practice throughout the profession.
This session will be filmed at the conference and be available on the Greenbuild website in the months following.
