Following last week’s announcement of the 2015 AIA/AAH award winning projects, a number of publications featured the winning projects. From Fast Co’s feature of hospital designs that improve patient’s lives to Architect’s project features, award-winning healthcare projects made a splash.
We’re excited our work on the Fifth XiangYa Hospital in China counted among the winners. The Hospital in a Garden is embedded in the natural landscape of Xianguling Park. The landscape sequence and progression choreographs the visitor experience from the urban to the natural. People filtering into the hospital from the plaza view or enter the Healing Garden, both a place of reflection and focal point. Above the Healing Garden, stepped terraces planted with vibrant colored azaleas and rhododendrons lead up and into the mountain paths. Spaces, services and systems are sized, placed and formed to support the holistic experience of the patients as they heal. In addition to the provision of the best healthcare, patients and their families are empowered by transparency and access, including: access to outdoor terraces and gardens, access to natural light penetrating deep into the space, access to views of nature, gardens and the sky.
