PAYETTE has been working with Boston Children’s Hospital to extend their system of satellite service facilities. As one part of the expansion, PAYETTE has designed a five story ambulatory surgical building that is currently under construction and includes surgery, radiology, clinics (orthopedics, GI, ophthalmology and ORL), as well as offices, food services, building support services and a loading dock.
Because the client had an ambitious cost target for this facility, Target Value Design was utilized at the start of schematics to help drive decisions related to the design of the facility. Fourteen separate aspects of the project were given budget allocations that were then used to guide the decision-making process. While all fourteen areas were addressed, the TVD process identified the mechanical and electrical systems and the exterior façade as having the highest cost variability for medical buildings, so special focus was placed on those. Through a process of options planning and early estimates, design decisions were made so the final schematic Design reflected the target cost goals of the project.
