The Future Cancer Hospital will be New England’s only inpatient hospital dedicated exclusively to cancer care. It will be operated by Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI) and is made possible by their new collaboration with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC). Emerging from our joint work with both entities on comprehensive Institutional Master plans, the location of the former Joslin Diabetes Institute (expanded by PAYETTE in 1976) lends the perfect site for shared resources, services, and excellence in clinical care.
A dynamic architecture effortlessly brings together expressions of softness and warmth, that unite function with performance. A series of glass “petals” embraces the patient rooms to receive visual support from organic stem structures. This high-performance rain-screen façade will takes its place as a unique addition to the Longwood Medical and Academic Area skyline. Targeting LEED Gold certification, the project is all-electric ready for a low-carbon future.

COLLABORATIVE DESIGN FOR HEALING
This patient-centered care environment results from a highly collaborative programming and design process. The 300-bed inpatient hospital will include essential diagnostic and support services such as an observation unit, imaging, radiation oncology, family support services, pharmacy, café, and a lobby garden. Street level local retail enlivens Brookline Avenue and an underground 200+ car valet garage will ease traffic congestion.
Working in close collaboration with Michael Van Valkenburgh Landscape Architects, the project includes the renewal of Joslin Park and comprehensive upgrades to the adjoining urban realm.
