The School of Medicine Master Plan choreographs a series of space renewals to support sustainable growth as well as strategic opportunities to invest in new facilities across all four of the School of Medicine’s campuses. The planning process incorporates both a quantitative space needs assessment as well as a qualitative benchmarking process with peer institutions to support bold yet grounded objectives. A series of investigations into thematic research considered affinities in disease and healing, technology and funding sources lends identity to precincts within the School of Medicine’s portfolio and leverages unique characteristics of each location across Atlanta.

The master plan focused on improving links between faculty in clinical practice and clinical and translational research while also supporting steady growth in the basic sciences. The plan defines space allocation standards beyond ‘wet’ and ‘dry’ to encompass the spectrum of research pursuits and their myriad space requirements.
Renovations and realignments are sequenced across campus with a particular focus on the iconic but dated Woodruff Memorial Building. The provision of new, modern experimental research space enables the transformation of Woodruff into a center for clinical and translational research, taking advantage of its adjacency to Emory University Hospital.
The planning process also accounted for potential long-term impacts of COVID-19 on the future of learning and office environments. It empowers the School of Medicine to provide leadership around interprofessional education spaces like shared simulation labs and envisions a shift towards shared, flexible office spaces to support the varied needs of administrative staff.
This strategic master plan prepares Emory’s School of Medicine to embark on a series of capital projects that can be reorganized as funding is available to achieve strategic goals across the research, learning and administrative enterprise.
