The Visioning, Space and Programming Study for the University of Washington School of Public Health has provided a cohesive vision that supports and articulates the School’s mission, values and goals. One of the leading schools of public health in the nation, the School is spread out across the city of Seattle. The wide dispersion of faculty, staff and students hinders the School’s people-centered, collaborative and multidisciplinary approach to addressing public health issues. This Visioning Study addressed the facility needs of the School, developed a building program for a new facility and helped the School of Public Health visualize a physical space identity for its new home.

The key findings of the study indicated that the School of Public Health needs to coalesce physically and socially. A new facility, in a location yet to be determined, with flexible and adaptable buildings designed to support the School’s interdisciplinary teaching, research and service, would consolidate the faculty, foster collaboration, enhance the student experience and strengthen both the School and the various UW programs that focus on health.
The study was instrumental to defining the tools, strategies and guidelines that support the cohesive vision of the School while addressing future space requirements; creating spaces that are welcoming, technologically advanced, inspiring and flexible, which promote collaboration, creativity, productivity and morale while balancing privacy with conviviality.
