The Aga Khan Hospital, Dar es Salaam, managed by the Aga Khan Health Services (AKHS), celebrated the official opening of the Phase 2 hospital redevelopment and expansion. Operating in Tanzania since the 1920s, it is among the longest-serving healthcare institutions in East Africa.
The first phase (“Phase 2”) of the hospital’s redevelopment and expansion includes the new building illustrated to the left, as well as full renovation of the adjacent existing building that house an expanded imaging department, surgical suite, inpatient units for maternity, pediatrics, med/surg patients, and a new private wing, as well as clinical support spaces. The renovated and new buildings are connected by an open-air veranda concourse the will improve the flow of staff and patients between new and existing facilities. The ground levels serves as the main public circulation of all services on the hospital campus. On the screened upper levels, patient transfer and staff circulation are separated from the public and visitors, increasing hospital efficiency by separating on-stage and off-stage functions. Lush courtyards between the veranda concourse and the hospital buildings provide additional space for waiting, contemplation, and visual and environmental relief within the dense complex – an example of the concept of embedded nature that has long been a hallmark of PAYETTE’s work for the Aga Khan Development Network.
During the opening ceremony, Princess Zahra, and His Excellency Kassim Majaliwa, Prime Minister of Tanzania presided over the inauguration of Phase 2 of its expansion program.
I am pleased to say that … today the hospital employs some of the most qualified and competent human resources, supplemented by world-class technical expertise, and that this hospital will offer specialised programmes in cardiology, oncology, neurosciences, advanced critical care, diagnostics as well as responding to the increasing burden of non-communicable diseases in Tanzania.
Princess Zahra
