Covering a site of almost 30 acres, the Fifth XiangYa Hospital is currently under construction, scheduled to open in the fall of 2019.
For context and to offer perspective on the scale of this future hospital, below is a map of the Longwood Medical Area with the Fifth XiangYa Hospital represented in red. The new hospital will provide a new world class model for the delivery of healthcare in China, accommodating over 100,000 patients a day and housing over 2,500 patient rooms.
The hospital is conceived as a nested network of systems. The distribution of systems is matched with a series of building components that support them. While these systems are interdependent and tightly integrated, the building parts are architecturally expressed as separate volumes, clearly articulated and differentiated, intended to reveal a clear and transparent organization of programs and circulation. The campus consists of two major wings: a General Hospital on the south, and a VIP Hospital on the north.
Part mapping exercise, part design project, part model-shop tutorial, the DigiFab Quilt is a favorite tradition of the OpenLAB Studio Fabrication course. Referencing a map from 1912 of the Nubian Square site and comparing it to the present day, students designed a ‘speculative interpolation’ that imagined a potential urban condition that might have existed between these two moments in Boston’s development.
