Next week, PAYETTE Principals Ian Adamson and Jeff DeGregorio will be presenting our Cornell Kimball Hall Renovation project at the 2017 S-Lab Conference in York, England. During the two-day event on May 9-10, the conference will have conference keynotes and 80+ sessions focusing on innovations in science research facilities for university and other sectors.
High Performance Interdisciplinary Research at Cornell’s Kimball Hall: A Rebirth Model for 1960s Facilities
The renovation of Cornell University Kimball Hall was the prototype project to demonstrate the potential that their existing buildings have to meet the next generation of interdisciplinary research needs of the College of Engineering. Although small in footprint, the renovation design of Kimball Hall weaves together a series of layers (low energy office workspace, high intensity support zone and a highly flexible, open research laboratory) to create an integrated and cohesive research neighborhood that supports a wide range of activity, including wet bench research to open equipment and robotics. The simple elegance of the loft-like design execution is accented by bold accent colors and materials within a bright daylit series of spaces.
