We are delighted to announce that Calvin Boyd, AIA, is the recipient of the 2024 BSA Earl R. Flansburgh Young Designers Award. Named for Earl R. Flansburgh, FAIA – a distinguished Boston architect who generously supported emerging professionals – the award recognizes design excellence by an architect under 40. Please join us in celebrating Calvin’s remarkable contributions to advancing both design and the empowerment of others within our profession.
At his core, Calvin is a teacher. He has taught a first-year design studio at Wentworth Institute of Technology, served as an instructor with OpenLAB Boston, and worked with the Private Industry Council High School Intern Program, helping to inspire the next generation of architects.
During his thesis work at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, Calvin focused on the architecture of protest and memorialization, designing a counter-memorial for victims of police brutality.
Calvin continued his pursuit of designing just places and professions in his work with the Boston Society of Architects. Calvin chaired the BSA’s Ethics Committee and BSA EDI Network before being appointed to the nonprofit’s 2025 Board of Directors. In 2022, Calvin launched the “Modern Ethics” initiative, a series of monthly prompts to enable discussion and education on the AIA Code of Ethics.
At PAYETTE, Calvin served as a member of our Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee from 2021-2024 and co-led the completion of PAYETTE’s JUST Label certification, demonstrating his dedication to creating more inclusive and equitable environments.
Calvin, your impact on both the profession and the community is truly outstanding. Congratulations!
