PAYETTE Project Finalist for Harleston Parker Medal!

We are excited to announce our Northeastern University Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Complex is a finalist for the 2017 Harleston Parker Medal.

The Harleston Parker Medal award was established in 1921 by J. Harleston Parker in memory of his father. The first award was granted by the Boston Society of Architects/AIA in 1923. The intent of the award is to acknowledge the “single most beautiful building or other structure” built in the metropolitan Boston area in the past 10 years. The Northeastern University Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Complex reflects the University’s ambition to establish itself as a premier research institution with the addition of a state-of-the art science facility in Boston. The 234,000 GSF building houses four academic research disciplines—engineering, health sciences, basic sciences and computer science—and defines a dynamic and collaborative research culture.

The building’s dynamic skin was developed using a parametric model and custom compositing software that enabled us to accurately simulate solar performance, and thus optimize the sunshade system design. Sunshade system performance output was fed directly into the building energy model, allowing our engineers to right-size MEP equipment with great precision and yielded significant cost savings. The ISEC is tracking LEED Gold and complies with the 2030 Commitment energy reduction targets.

Past winners include the Bruce C. Bolling Municipal Building (2016) by Mecanoo Architecten with Sasaki; the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum Addition (2015) by Renzo Piano Building Workshop with Stantec; and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston Art of the Americas Wing (2014) by Foster + Partners with CBT Architects.

The winner will be announced at the 7th BSA Design Awards Gala on Thursday, January 18, 2018.
