Finding Inspiration: Tyler Loewen

Inspiration can come from anywhere. Nearly every design challenge begins with some exploration and search for inspiration. We took a few moments to chat with Tyler Loewen about where he finds inspiration. Tyler joined PAYETTE in 2017 and is currently working on the renovation of Welch Hall for the University of Texas at Austin.

Inspiration is abundant when actively engaging a critical eye through daily activities, from restaurant packaging to macro views of the patterns in nature. As we dive deeper into a technological world and turn a blind eye to our surroundings, we have to be more mindful to disconnect from our devices and be in the moment.

I find I am most inspired by the processes of nature and their refusal to bend to our intentions in the built environment. For example, a wind-blown seed can unexpectedly flourish into thriving vegetation or wildlife has an innate adaptability to our urban surroundings. These translate directly into our infrastructural systems and in the ways we seek resiliency and the integration of landscape in our urban communities. On a detail level, I continue to be inspired by craftsmanship and their textures including woven textiles and Japanese wood joinery.
