Earlier this month we hosted a Metropolis Think Tank event focused on the use of architectural mock-ups in healthcare design. By giving core users and communities the opportunity to engage with the mock-ups, they can then provide critical insights to ensure the design is accessible and able to accommodate the ever-increasing spatial and technological needs of the healthcare industry. We were joined by a distinguished panel of healthcare professionals from Boston hospitals and healthcare architects, including PAYETTE Senior Associate Susan Blomquist.
Moderated by Metropolis’ Director of Design Innovation Susan S. Szenasy, the panelists’ discussions ranged from the importance of designing for the future, as much as the present, to the value of feedback from various parts of their communities. In congruence with the participation of the audience, the panelists provided great perspective on the advancement of healthcare design.
Mockups and Community Engagement in Healthcare Design
The healthcare space is rapidly expanding and evolving technologically, subsequently calling for the development of new, more personalized design solutions. Using architectural mock-ups, architects and designers can engineer impermanent, to-scale models that core users and communities can engage and provide critical insights to ensure the design is accessible and aligned with client and project needs. Drawing on projects of different scales and serving different populations, this panel explored what we can learn from mock-ups and how they can be leveraged to advance design in healthcare.
