The University of Alabama at Birmingham, School of Nursing is among the top five percent of nursing schools in the US. Our recent Renovation and Addition project creates state-of-the-art spaces for students and faculty, allowing them to continue to drive the future of healthcare in Alabama and around the globe. A combination of new and renovated space on the ground floor brings together classrooms, skills labs and the Nursing Competency Suite on one level, concentrating the learning experience on one level.
I realize you had a vision for the SON that would transform the way we lived, worked and learned...But somehow, we never anticipated the full scale of the vision until the past several months as the building has become a reality!

The Nursing Competency Suite puts healthcare on display, replicating real-life emergencies in safe, controlled environments, using extraordinarily life-like mannequins. The simulation mannequins connect to a variety of monitors, providing real-time patient vitals and information, while instructors control the mannequin’s symptoms and observe the students from rooms connected to each lab.
The Nightingale Scholar Center is designed based on Florence Nightingale’s ideal patient ward dimensions and is used as an inspirational classroom. Opening onto a unique corner park, three large classrooms transform into an immense leadership institute, exhibiting innovative education technology that promotes active learning and encourages collaboration.
With the project complete, the building has filled with activity as students from across the University utilize the new student and learning spaces!
