New Commission for University of California, Berkeley

PAYETTE, in association with Leddy Maytum Stacy Architects (LMSA) in San Francisco, has won an exciting new commission for the College of Engineering at University of California, Berkeley. The new building—a catalytic project in PAYETTE’s 2020 College of Engineering Master Plan—is envisioned as a state-of-the art interdisciplinary hub for the College, not only addressing research and teaching needs, but also fostering collaboration and community.

PAYETTE and LMSA’s shared design philosophy focuses on sustainable buildings for people and we understand the best buildings do not occupy space, they create it. This new building has an opportunity to be different, not only rethinking how the College of Engineering’s buildings engage the outdoors, but how they engage people. It will also provide an opportunity to explore methods in which complex research buildings can meet the university’s forward looking carbon reduction and sustainable design standards.

Over the past 25 years, engineering has grown tremendously. This new building will support interdisciplinary projects, become a desired campus destination and attract students from all engineering disciplines and the entire university population.
