We design buildings for teamwork so that medical students learn and prepare to practice together. While interaction occurs in classrooms and informal study spaces, the shared use of simulation areas and teaching labs provide the most potential for interdisciplinary education. Our space planning and programming methodology is designed to support this integration at multiple scales. At the scale of individual rooms, both Tufts University’s gross anatomy labs and the University of Hartford’s simulation and standardized patient care spaces are designed for use by multiple programs. Integration informs our approach to design not only because clients seek multi-use spaces but because the healthcare profession requires graduates who understand the broader continuum of care.
Lynn R. Goldman, MD, MS, MPH, Professor, GWU, 2015Milken Institute SPH is also a living model of a healthy workplace and actively promotes public health in ways large and small. An open, skylit central stair that visually connects all the building's floors invites visitors, staff and students to walk instead of taking the elevators, which are placed discreetly out of view.
