The National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG) celebrated the official opening of the Hardiman Research Building on May 1. PAYETTE, teamed with Reddy Architecture and Urbanism, designed a group of three research buildings for the University. The Hardiman Research Building is located at the heart of the NUIG Campus and houses next-generation graduate, post-graduate and faculty library space dedicated to academic research. NUIG’s vision for the building aspired to facilitate knowledge generation and to foster collaboration in a flexible space dedicated for research. The heart of the building features two “stackless” reading rooms, designed and furnished to enable individual and collaborative scholarship.
Though the University just celebrated the official opening of the Hardiman Research Building, the project was recently named Architectural Project of the Year in the 2014 Irish Building & Design Awards. Of the Hardiman Research Building, Minister Ruairi Quinn said: “… [the building] is a unique platform for digital humanities and social sciences research in Ireland and will further develop NUI Galway’s reputation as a major international research centre in the field of digital humanities.”
