Brian Spangler, New Co-Chair of BSA Revit Users’ Group

PAYETTE’s own Brian Spangler is taking over as co-chair of the Boston Society of Architects Revit Users’ Group. Here, he tells us a bit about the program and what he envisions for the group in the near future.

What made you want to co-chair the BSA Revit Users’ Group (RUG)?
Generally speaking, I really enjoy following the trends and discussions related to the design industry’s digital documentation world. It is a fast-moving, constantly-evolving topic, and a discussion that designers of all levels can contribute to. I think it is this widespread, quickly-growing range of discussion topics and diverse group of people that particularly attracts me to this group.

How do you think that Revit most benefits the design and documentation process?
Each project that uses the platform will have a completely different list to answer this question. The strength of the program lies in its flexibility.

What has been the most significant change in the program, or its use, since you’ve become familiar with it?
From my perspective, I think the designers who are using the software have been the biggest change. There is now a stronger commitment to investigating the program’s capabilities. Designers are increasingly trying to extrapolate and expand upon new processes, such as how the platform can manage digital fabrication of complex geometry. The experimental culture that has developed around the program seems to be more and more rigorous.

What will be your focus for RUG moving forward?
A major goal will be increasing high-level discussion and idea sharing. Although the RUG will continue to explore technical and objective topics, the co-chairs plan to emphasize subjective issues that instigate discussion and opinion. We hope this reinvigorated focus on dialogue will attract designers looking to share their thoughts, regardless of Revit exposure and experience.
