We are deeply saddened to announce that Sho-Ping Chin, FAIA passed away on Saturday, June 13. Sho-Ping was a talented and compassionate architect who was fiercely determined to design healthcare architecture of the highest caliber for those in need. In no place is this better demonstrated than her selfless and steadfast commitment to bring state-of- the-art healthcare to Haiti. It is our hope that one of her final projects, the Maternity Ward and Neonatal Care Unit at L’Hôpital de St. Boniface Hospital, will have lasting impact.
During her tenure at PAYETTE Sho-Ping was instrumental to the firm’s healthcare practice. Sho-Ping believed that architecture can be achieved in each project regardless of program, scope or mission and she brought that belief to every project she encountered. In addition to her contributions as a Principal of the firm, she was a wonderful mentor and instilled her teams with a sense of camaraderie and commitment to design.
Throughout her career she was instrumental in defining the national discourse for Women in Design (WiD), initiating dialogue within the Boston Society of Architects (BSA) and then at a national level within the AIA with a focus on Women and Leadership.
However, what we will most miss is her intangible wit, her red pencil sketches, her compassion, her pride and humility, her willingness to listen and the way she brought people together. Sho-Ping was an admirable mentor, friend and architect.
