This month’s issue of High Performing Buildings includes an in-depth case study of Harvard University’s Sherman Fairchild Laboratory Renovation. When Harvard University created the Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology (SCRB) Department, it needed to find a home for the department. Harvard University chose to breathe new life into the existing Sherman Fairchild Biochemistry Building as a case study to develop the laboratory of the future within an existing building. The article includes an in-depth look at the design strategies implemented that contributed to a highly sustainable renovation for Harvard. The challenges presented for the Sherman Fairchild Biochemistry building renovation created an opportunity to look for novel laboratory designs and innovative solutions surrounding the supporting infrastructure. By focusing on reducing demand, decreasing the size of required infrastructure, shifting toward hydronic-based cooling, and leveraging the latent qualities of the building without sacrificing the needs of the scientists, the designers created a roadmap for the next generation of renovations for laboratory use.
