We are thrilled to annouce that our video project “You are Here: Wendy’s Welcome to the ED” has received some great exposure! The nine-minute animated video is a cartoon hospital guidebook that will be shown to every patient who enters MGHfC’s emergency room with the hope of alleviating patient stress in the pediatric Emergency Department. The project was showcased in the Boston Magazine as they spoke with Wendy Wooden, the voice and inspiration of the video, explaining how this project came about.
As highlighted in the article, Wendy has spent 200 days as an inpatient at the Massachusetts General Hospital for Children (MGHfC) having been diagnosed at the age of three with hemolytic uremic syndrome. Due to the illness, Wendy suffered heart failure, received a kidney transplant and had part of her intestine removed.
Today she is a healthy and active 12-year old, and Wendy and her mother Darcy Daniels wanted to help future patients’ visits be a little bit easier – which is how the idea for the video was born.
“Children who are coming into the hospital are scared and don’t really want to be there,” Wendy explains. The video may ease some of their fears.
The narrative helps pediatric patients understand what to expect during an ER visit. After vetting the project with the MGH Family Advisory Council and originally proposing the project as a booklet for kids and families to read when they first arrived, the project goals shifted to a digital format. Without the resources to create a video animation, Darcy reached out to her network, which is where PAYETTE entered the picture. Drawing on the talents of over 20 people in our firm, we animated and produced the video.
The final product follows an animated Wendy — voiced by her real-life counterpart — as she strolls through the hospital, casually explaining what happens at each stage of a child’s visit.
“There’s some things I don’t know about the hospital, even though I’ve been there for a long time, but I did know most of it,” said Wendy.
