Artifacts from the fourth year of our OpenLAB Studio. This fall, we hosted ten fourth-year architecture students from Virginia Tech and Hampton University for a semester-long immersion in our office across three courses.
The studio project focused on developing a new precinct in Nubian Square in the Roxbury neighborhood of Boston, a historically significant site that has undergone many transformations over its 394-year history. The project explores the concept of "layered space," using the area`s rugged urbanity as a backdrop. The studio included a master planning phase where teams explored the square`s history, community, and development potential, followed by the design and development of five community and cultural buildings in the square, each contributing to the ensemble of a new vital urban center.
