PAYETTE’s Kristyn Hill is among 24 designers from 4 cities, connecting and creating in a new way in the Mannington Commercial Design Local competition. Design Local is a new product development program that teams practicing designers to create a carpet and hard surface collection inspired by four U.S. cities (Washington D.C., Austin, San Francisco, and Chicago). Kristyn joined Team Washington D.C. with four designers local to the area and one hailing from New York City.
24 HOURS, 1 BIG IDEA
One weekend in October the six Team D.C. set out in a two-day design immersion, exploring D.C. with a sketch book and camera. As a starting point for the product development, the team collaborated to select color palettes, design direction and determined how to capture the essence of the city based on their findings.
INSPIRATION TO INTERPRETATION
Over the last few months, the team shared ideas and tweaked final designs with Mannington’s technical designers. Along with Mannington’s product designers, the team created patterns inspired by topography and transportation, maps of experience expressed in texture and colors that reflect the neutral buildings, contrasts of greenspaces and cherry blossoms.
