We are pleased to announce the Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Complex at Northeastern University received an American Architecture Award organized by the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies. The award’s program is one of the United States’ most comprehensive public program that promotes the best design worldwide.
From a short list of 340 projects, the 2018 Jury for Awards was held in New York. Projects were selected by a distinguished group of New York architects and educators.
Constructed on an urban brownfield site that consisted of a surface parking lot set between two garages, the Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Complex (ISEC) forms the initial phase of a long-term vision to link the University’s Huntington Avenue Campus with Columbus Avenue, span the MBTA and Amtrak rail lines, and connect the Fenway and Roxbury neighborhoods. The motivation for the new ISEC stems from the University’s desire to establish itself as a premier research institution with the most cutting-edge science facility in Boston.
The ISEC, housing a vibrant interdisciplinary research community, is shaped by faculty neighborhoods and wide open, flexible laboratories that surround a six-story atrium, or melting pot, at the heart of the new academic precinct. A mix of wet labs, dry labs and computational space on each floor support interdisciplinary research teams as they tackle today’s complex scientific challenges. The new building represents the first completed phase of the new academic precinct, with Phase 2, the pedestrian connection (PedX), slated for completion in 2018.
The Chicago Athenaeum will host an Awards Gala Dinner Ceremony on Wednesday, June 20 at The Institute of International Education in New York honoring the winning architects, clients and developers who have received The American Architectural Awards.
In September 2018, winning projects will also be displayed in a special exhibition at The Istanbul Design Biennale in Instanbul, Turkey. The exhibition is organized by the Chicago Athenaeum and the European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies.
We are honored to receive this award and would like to congratulate all the 2018 honorees!
