We are thrilled to announce we have been selected as the national firm to lead the planning and design of a new Academic Science Building at the University of Kentucky. We will be teamed with JRA Architects of Lexington, Kentucky. The $100M overall project will be a key element in fulfilling the “Kentucky Promise” …
“nearly 150 years ago, the university was formed as a covenant with the people of the state to provide education, conduct research and render service – all in the hopes of creating a brighter future for the Commonwealth.” (University of Kentucky news, Nov. 9 2012)
The 263,000 SF new facilities will focus on providing state-of-the-art undergraduate teaching and research laboratories, formal and informal learning spaces, for biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics and geosciences. The project will begin with a programming effort to determine how to best utilize the existing facilities and create a new environment that inspires and engages both students and faculty, becomes a center for undergraduate sciences on the campus and promotes student and faculty recruitment and retention.
The identified site for the building is at the corner of Rose Street and Huguelet Drive. This high profile location allows the project to be a gateway between the medical and main campuses. This is identified as the first of two phases for construction on this site. The building design will have to be carefully crafted to link a new residential core with the academic campus. The project is anticipated to be completed for the Fall 2016 semester.
