We are thrilled to announce our George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health project received an AIA New York Committee on the Environment (COTE) Honor Award!
The four winning projects were determined to be exemplars of socially and environmentally responsible urban design. This year’s recipients were selected based upon a comprehensive set of criteria designed to showcase the full breadth of the architectural process, from community engagement to post-occupancy.
The awards program, which is modeled after the nearly two-decades-old COTE National Awards, aims at making sustainable design processes transparent through diverse metrics that demonstrate an innovative approach towards resiliency, local site response, passive design, water conservation, energy flow, materials and construction, as well as flexibility and adaptability.
The Milken Institute of Public Health is a LEED Platinum certified 161,000 GSF building that houses all seven of the School of Public Health departments in order to encourage more interdisciplinary collaboration among faculty and students. For this project, we successfully exploited numerous planning, organization and technical execution strategies to make this building a powerful vehicle for communication sustainable design intent.
The project features a number of key sustainability components, including a green roof, native plantings, low-flow plumbing fixtures, lighting controls, C02 monitoring and local, rapidly renewable and recycled content materials, such as bamboo wall paneling. The building’s HVAC systems consist of both active chilled beam and mass air displacement technologies.
The 2016 recipients will be honored at an awards ceremony at the Center for Architecture on Tuesday, November 1. Included will be presentations by the winning teams and a discussion between the jurors and winners.
