Five years after our first exhibit at Virginia Tech, we returned to Blacksburg with a truck loaded with models, drawings, and artifacts, showcasing the work of the Fall 2024 OpenLAB Boston Studio, now in its fourth year at PAYETTE. We are so proud of the work generated from this incredible group of students.
This year’s prompt focused on Nubian Square in the Roxbury neighborhood of Boston, a historically significant site that has undergone many transformations over its 394-year history. Once farmland, it evolved through stages as a suburb to a commercial center, and now an urban wasteland. The project explored the concept of "layered space," using the area`s rugged urbanity as a backdrop. The studio included a master planning phase where teams explored the square`s history, community, and development potential, followed by the design and development of five community and cultural buildings in the square, each contributing to the ensemble of a new vital urban center.
